our entire team of artisans, receptionists and restaurant staff have always taken intense pride
in introducing all our guests to the flair of French joie de vivre in the arts, gastronomy and refined dining.

Côte d’Azur : Pastis and Father Gil Fiorini. ___________________________________________

Brittany, Alsace, Côte d’Azur… every region has its terroir, its products, its traditions and its personality, as do the men and women born there. Which is precisely what makes France so rich in culinary and cultural traditions.

The administrator of the Mesnage Augier Negresco’s Endowment Fund is also senior priest in Nice and rector of the Madone d’Utelle sanctuary, and the inventor of his own ‘Pastis Père Gil‘! He keeps the recipe a very close secret but we know it includes a big dose of generosity, a pinch of joy and a dash of conviviality!

Recurrent theme or impermanent piece, this artist’s oeuvre demands our attention.

For many the name Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) conjures up the entertaining plump figures of her colourful and imposing Nanas. But here in the Negresco, the Franco-American artist’s Yellow Nana (1995) is a precious tangible testimony to her friendship with Jeanne Augier.

Exalting life, a symbol of the artist’s reconciliation with herself and an ode to Côte d’Azur colour, her work is perfectly at home in the Nouveau Réalisme movement initiated in collaboration with Yves Klein and Christo.

The great French Impressionist painter was an excellent sculptor too.
___________________________________________

Renoir took up sculpture very late in life, apparently having first tried his hand around 1875 by sculpting members of his family, including his son Claude.

In 1915, after his wife’s death, he sculpted a bust of her and cast it in bronze for her tomb near Cagnes-sur-Mer. Inspired by a portrait in oils that Renoir had painted 20 years earlier, it expresses all the Impressionist master’s art and style.

Like all Bretons, the Negresco’s grande dame has never lacked character or taste. Undoubtedly that’s why she’s easily tempted by salt-butter cakes and biscuits, the delicious blending of sweetness and piquancy that’s a feature of Brittany.

The distinction’s origins lie with zealous pioneers driven by a legitimate desire to spread the word as widely as possible about the quality of French artisans’ and workers’ production. The Société des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France was started in 1929 following the success of the first craft exhibitions. Fabric printdesigner Georges Castelain was chosen as president of the prestigious organisation: “We must make our association one big family and consider each other as brothers born of the same father, Work, and mother, France […]. We must help, protect and support each other in all life’s circumstances.

By highlighting 200 crafts and specialities, the Société has since then worked to promote manual skills, encourage innovation while respecting tradition, and pass on knowhow to future generations. These principles are written into the MOF charter. The competition for MOF titles, held every four years, demands months, years even, of preparation in the hope of obtaining that government certificate, valid lifelong, rewarding French excellence.

The Negresco is immensely proud to have several MOF on its staff.

The famous 17th-century painter reached the acme of his art in his portraits of Louis XIV.
___________________________________________

This portrait of the Sun King wearing his coronation robes is among the most accomplished masterpieces by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), reproduced in virtually every history book.
As part of the collection belonging to Louis-Philippe (1773-1850), Duke of Orleans then King of France from 1830 to 1848, the painting hung in the main reception room of his family’s residence, the Château d’Eu.

The original is today in the Louvre but two signed copies exist, one in the Palace of Versailles, the other here in the Versailles Lounge of the Hôtel Negresco.
