This portrait of the Sun King wearing his coronation robes is among the most accomplished masterpieces by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), reproduced in virtually every history book. As part of the collection belonging to Louis-Philippe (1773-1850), Duke of Orleans then King of France from 1830 to 1848, the painting hung in the main reception room of his family’s residence, the Château d’Eu.
The original is today in the Louvre but two signed copies exist, one in the Palace of Versailles, the other here in the Versailles Lounge of the Hôtel Negresco.
